The Birthright Citizenship Flip
For years, Lindsey Graham was a vocal defender of birthright citizenship, arguing in 2010 that the 14th Amendment was a sacred American legal protection that should not be altered. When Donald Trump announced a snap withdrawal of US troops from Syria, Graham publicly slammed the plan as an “Obama-like mistake” that would betray Kurdish allies. The Emergency Flip
During the government shutdown, Graham repeatedly urged Donald Trump to “give it one last shot” and work out a legislative deal with Democrats instead of declaring a national emergency. Yet, just days later, he completely reversed course and demanded Trump declare an emergency.

The Syria Withdrawal Surrender
Just weeks after slamming Donald Trump’s snap withdrawal of troops from Syria as a “disastrous, Obama-like mistake” (Event 8), Graham met with the President for a private lunch. Immediately afterward, he completely reversed his stance and praised the withdrawal strategy.
Rather than standing firm on his foreign policy warnings to protect Kurdish allies, Graham abandoned his national security critiques as soon as he received direct presidential pushback.

In 2018, Lindsey Graham declared that Robert Mueller’s Special Counsel investigation was critical and must be protected, warning that firing Mueller would be the “beginning of the end” of Trump’s presidency (Event 6). But once the investigation concluded, Graham did a total 180° turn.
As Senate Judiciary Chairman, Graham used his authority to actively discredit the investigation he had previously protected, launching massive retaliatory probes into the DOJ investigators themselves.
